top spanish dramas to watch this summer

In this post, I will share some Spanish dramas I watched this year (and last year). This is an updated list since I accidentally deleted the other entry & couldn’t retrieve it. I’ll share what the dramas are about, and my ratings. These are (mostly) spoiler-free ratings.

All these shows have English subtitles available, so definitely check them out!

the most beautiful flower / la flor más bella

summary: Confident Mich knows she’s fabulous. Now she just has to convince everyone else at her Xochimilco high school to believe it too.

platform: netflix

episodes: 10

link: la flor mas bella

rating: 10/10

I first watched La Flor Mas Bella because I love Spanish dramas. In La Flor Mas Bella, Mich was on a mission to become popular at her school. Mich was also the center of a love cube, which is like a love triangle but with three different people fighting for her love and attention. I really liked Mich’s determination in getting center in the school play, figuring out her relationships & sexuality, figuring out whether she was joining the beauty pageant and more.

I absolutely loved La Flor Más Bella & the main character Mich was such a star! I wish it had more episodes because it was just that good so it definitely needs to be renewed for another season.

who killed sara? / ¿quién mató a sara?

image via netflix

summary: After being framed for the death of his sister, Alex tries to find the real culprit and get his revenge.

platform: netflix

episodes: 25 episodes total (3 seasons)

link: who killed sara?

rating: 8/10

Who Killed Sara? was one of the very first Spanish shows I watched on Netflix. The drama follows Alex Guzmán after he spent 18 years in prison for killing his sister, when he didn’t. He’s committed to finding out who killed Sara and getting revenge on the Lazcano family, who he believed killed her.

It has a soap opera pace, with each episode only being 30 minutes long. I watched Season 1 and 2 back to back and  it was very entertaining. There were unexpected twists, and although it took a moment for me to keep track of every character’s relationships, it was entertaining. Season 3 simultaneously dragged on while tying up loose ends from past seasons which I give 8/10. This is one of those shows where if you suspend belief, don’t question anything being “realistic” and go with the flow, you’ll have a good time.

control z

summary: Sofia, an observant student, works to uncover a hacker that is releasing students secrets online to the entire high school.

platform: netflix

episodes: 24 episodes total (3 seasons)

link: control z

rating: 9/10

Control Z kept me invested since I watched it after first starting Who Killed Sara?. In Control Z, an unknown hacker exposes students secrets, causing everyone to turn on each other. I loved that the quiet student, Sofia, wasn’t suspected to be the culprit and used her observant nature to investigate who was releasing everyone’s secrets.

With all the use of social media, dramas like this with a digital hacker or person sending evil messages is always entertaining to me. Similar to Who Killed Sara?, the final season dragged on and answered questions from previous seasons.

rebelde

summary: Set at an elite private school, students band together and fight against each other to win Battle of the Bands.

platform: netflix

episodes: 16 episodes total (2 seasons)

link: rebelde

rating: 8/10

I love school-based dramas, so as soon as I saw there was a Rebelde reboot, I knew I had to watch. The series features a range of students at Elite Way School, a prestigious boarding school.

Rebelde was definitely a fun watch. Dixon and MJ were definitely my favorite characters in both seasons. However, it was announced recently that it was canceled, so I’ll most likely just end up rewatching it again soon.

I hope you enjoyed these recommendations, so if any of the summaries sparked your interest, definitely check them out, even if just one episode. You may love it!
