my favorite songs of august & september 2025

Hello readers! It’s the fall season and I am back with another blog post, this time sharing my favorite songs of august and september 2025. These tracks have been on repeat all season, so let’s go!

specter by bad omens

Released ahead of Bad Omens new album, I immediately loved “Specter” the first time I heard it.

The song starts with an eerie soft instrumental, then Noah sings “Oh I can’t leave, but I can’t be in this place” and “years of living, with a cold and empty space, and it haunts me everytime I think I’m safe.. do you feel love?” The vocalist, Noah Sebastian, is a wonderful writer so I expected nothing less when listening to “Specter” Overall, it’s sad and eerie.

As the song goes on, the drums join in and it’s absolutely perfect in the production, deepening the eerie haunting. I love that the one and only time they say the word specter is “Oh, I’m changing and I feel more like a ghost, like a specter in your headlights on the road.” The imagery of a specter in the road, given the dark-blue and gray hue of the music video would be very creepy.

According to Merriam-Webster, a specter is a “a ghost, or something that haunts or perturbs the mind” In this song, we don’t know what’s exactly haunting him, but we do know it’s the lack of love and that “he’s learned to live with the way that it hurts.” Specter is the perfect title for being haunted by the emptiness.

god is a weapon by falling in reverse

Released ahead of Falling In Reverse’s tour, “God Is A Weapon” dropped in May 2025. I do not keep up with Falling In Reverse on their social media or updates, but this music video appeared on my YouTube feed. The title alone made me curious about the lyrics which include “They say that God’s a woman, I’ll worship you the same, because all I do is think about saying your name in vain.”

Both the song and music video feature Marilyn Manson, though he was not credited in the song title until a week after release which made his feature shocking when I first heard it. In his verse, he sings “I can’t stop from sinning, my halo’s just a hole” which lyrically, is dark and interesting, but also questionable. He also sings “they say that God’s a weapon, well I’m a hand grenade, try to take this ring from me and watch me detonate.”

I hadn’t heard any Marilyn Manson songs or features before this, and didn’t even know he still made music. Manson’s recent album “One Assassination Under God” was released in November 2024, so this feature seemed like his attempt at reaching back into the limelight amidst all his court investigations. In terms of production, the song is quite catchy and I love the pacing, and the drum breakdown. Both of these artists collaborating on a song implying that if God is a woman, then she’s a weapon that could be used against them is very bizarre and hypocritical – given both artists’ reputations.

how bad do u want me by lady gaga

Released on Lady Gaga’s MAYHEM album, “How Bad Do U Want Me” really is THAT song.

I first heard it live during The Mayhem Ball and the performance was perfect. Gaga opens with “the good girl in your dreams is mad you’re loving me, I know you wish that was me!” One of my favorite lyrics is “that girl in your head ain’t real, how bad do you want me for real?!” I love that message: I am not the girl in your head that you’re putting on a pedestal, so how bad do you really want ME? Although the song isn’t Lady Gaga’s usual sound, I love it and it makes me want to dance every single time.

creature in the black night by dayseeker

Released ahead of their upcoming album with the same name “Creature in the Black Night” dropped in July 2025. I first heard it in my sister’s car and immediately grabbed my phone to write it down in my notes app – it’s that good.

The lyrics initially caught me off guard, especially “I can make a scene when I feel degraded” (like OKAYYYYY). Other standout lyrics include “why are you lucid in the daylight? you feel like a stranger inside your skin. you run like a creature in the black night” The writing is dark, questioning and it’s like “so what if I run away? you gonna chase me?”

The breakdown at 2:40 paired with the deeper screaming of “you run, you run, like a creature black night” is stunning. The production makes it hit even harder, which gives a moody cinematic energy that lingers.

That’s all for today’s post!
